Textile Materials Short Course

Overview

ÉëÒ÷Ö®Íõ's Fashion and Textiles Research Group academics have a wide range of specialist knowledge and expertise with access to a state of the art textile research and testing laboratory. 

This one-day workshop will provide delegates with the fundamental knowledge of fabric formation and colouration with consideration for appropriate fibre choice, structure and colouration methods.

Structure and content

This short course includes:

  • Introduction to the basics of textile fibres and yarns
  • Weaving and woven structures
  • Knitting and knitted structures
  • Colouration and printing of textile materials

Who the course is for

The course is open to any business interested in this area and those wanting to enter the textile industry.

Specific role profiles that may benefit from this course include; Technicians, Buyers, Designers, Merchandisers, Technologists, Machinists, and those working in the textile industry and auxiliaries. 

This course is available to organisations looking to book a minimum of eight people.

Recommended prior knowledge

This course provides foundation knowledge of textile materials and therefore no prior knowledge is required. 

Key learning outcomes

Delegates will learn:

  • An understanding of the different fibre types and methods of identification.
  • The process of fibre to yarn form.
  • An appreciation for the different weave and knit structures and associated properties.
  • The application of colour to textile materials.

Our experts

Angela Davies, Senior Lecturer Textile Design, School of Fashion and Textiles, ÉëÒ÷Ö®Íõ.

Dr Angela Davies is a senior lecturer in textile technology/garment technology, with a BSc (Hons) in Clothing Design and Production and a PhD in technical textiles. Her PhD focused on the development of reusable incontinence products for residential and hospital use, which provides her with a wealth of expertise in the development and testing of medical textiles, requiring high temperature laundering for infection control.

Dr Davies has been principal and co-investigator on a number of regionally and European funded projects, working with technical textile and pharmaceutical SMEs and larger enterprises to support the development of new products and processes. This has involved the development and undertaking of product performance and textile testing of fibres, yarns, fabrics and end products. Her research interests include medical/ healthcare textiles, performance textiles, wearable technologies and product performance.

Programme leader for MSc Textile Design, Technology and Innovation, Dr Davies teaches across 4 programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Key areas of teaching include- product performance and quality control- textile testing, textile innovation, and textile sustainability. She undertakes supervision of undergraduate dissertations, MSc and MA dissertations and PhD student supervision. 

Delivery

Delivery of this short course will be subject to current Covid-19 guidelines, and can be discussed to determine the most suitable method for your organisation. 

In 2021-22 we will continue to follow UK Government guidance and adopt measures to keep our community and staff safe. This may include offering some contact hours and other elements of our provision via online technology. Find out more about these measures here.
